How do I prepare my floor plans?
To ensure that your floor plans look as good as possible we want to:
- Make sure that the white backgrounds have been removed.
- All of the floor plans must be of same height i.e. 800 px tall.
- Save them as PNG files.
Remove the Background
There are several ways to remove the background from an image, so we are going to walk through one way to do this. We are going to use a free online image editing tool,
Lunapic, to do this.
Note: If you have Photoshop, it is the fastest and easiest tool to do this. It is not free and if you have it, we assume you will not need help on how to do this part. If we are wrong let us know and we will add instructions for Photoshop as well.
- Go to Lunapic.
- Click the "Upload" link available at right side of the page and upload one of your floor plans.
- Click the "crop" link above the image, then drag a box over the image cutting out anything that is not needed, then click "Crop Image".
- Choose "Transparent Background" from the Edit drop-down menu.
- Click in the white area surrounding the image.
- Leave the default setting and click "Apply".
- Just below the image click on the "Save" button.
Now that we have a version of our Floorplan without a white background we just need to resize it and we will be done. Unfortunately, Lunapic does not have the best resize tools so we are going to use a secondary free online tool for this next step. The tool is called
PicResize.
- Go to PicResize.
- Click on the big white box that says "Drag and drop a file here or click", choose the Image from your computer that we just saved using the process above.
- Once the image opens, click the "Continue to edit picture" button.
- On the next screen scroll down the page until you see the dropdown that by default is set to "50% smaller" from that dropdown choose "Custom Size".
- In the "Height" field, type 800. This assumes your image is at least 800 px tall to begin with, if your image is smaller than this then you can choose a smaller size like 600 px. It is important that all of your floorplans be the same height, this makes them look more consistent on the site.
- Click "Resize My Image".
- On the next screen and click on "Save to Disk".
Once you have downloaded the final resized file you are ready to rename your file to something more SEO friendly that means better for the search engines. Try following this format:
PropertyName-City-State-Floorplan-A1.png
So if the Property was The Collective in Dallas, Texas and it was the A1 floorplan then the file name would be:
Collective-Dallas-Texas-Floorplan-A1.png.
You are now ready to upload the image!.
